Colonial American British Coin

Machin's Mills

Copper Half Penny

Made in America in 1775

This American-produced King George III copper halfpenny was among some of the only coinage produced in Colonial America at the time and was among the last produced under the British King. The goal of the imperial nations such as Great Britain was to keep the colonies "cash poor" making coinage in very short supply leaving the barrier for goods the primary monetary exchange. This point along with many others would be the breaking point for the American colonies and the year this coin was produced. Representatives from each colony were meeting for the first time as a "Continental Congress" to discuss measures to take to win back their rights as Englishmen. One year after this coin was produced, the members that congress saw that independence was the only way for them to regain rights creating the United States of America ....... if this coin could talk, what a story it could tell.
