WWI 48-Star American Flag Identified to Sgt. Harry E. Fry with Research

This original 48-star American flag dates to the World War I era and has been identified through our research to Sgt. Harry E. Fry.

Measuring approximately 3.5 feet by 5.5 feet, flags of this size were commonly used at temporary Army and Navy encampments during World War I. They could be flown to mark barracks, divisional headquarters, troop areas, or gathering points for incoming recruits. Similar flags were also used as storm flags during inclement weather to protect larger garrison flags from damage.

This piece includes a substantial research packet detailing Sgt. Fry’s military history, along with a smaller display tag summarizing the flag’s story and historical context.

The flag shows age and wear consistent with an original textile of this period. Please review all photographs carefully for condition.
