Ice Age Paleo Spear Point Base
Age: 14,000 - 9,000 Years Old - Paleo Period
The tools made by North America's first inhabitants, The Paleo Indians, are very distinctive. The Ice Age environment these people lived in was one of the harshest ever experienced by human beings. The earth was in an Ice Age. Predators include saber tooth tigers, dire wolves, and the American lion to name a few. All of them hunting prey like the giant sloth, woolly and Columbian mammoths, extinct species of giant bison, and Paleo Indians. The point in this frame was their only defensive weapon against predators and one of their only tools for survival. Due to the extreme conditions of the Ice Age, very few complete examples of this spear point survived. Hafted onto a shaft, these points were used with the Atlatl, the first weapon system invented by humans. The base was secured to the shaft by cortage leaving the blade exposed. Once broken, the base such as this example would be discarded. This artifact was collected on a Paleo site in the Tennessee/Kentucky region of The United States and is an authentic example of their territory.
