This is one of the first coins produced during the post-colonial and pre-federal era of the American Republic when the new nation was trying to figure out how to govern and how its currency should be produced and circulated.
These coins were abandoned in early 1789 in compliance with the newly ratified American constitution thus creating the Federal Republic we live in today.
