Larvikite is a coarse-grained igneous rock first discovered near Larvik, Norway, where it gets its name. Often mistaken for granite, it is actually a type of monzonite composed primarily of feldspar, which gives it its signature blue and silver flashes.
This shimmering effect, known as schiller or labradorescence, is caused by light reflecting off the internal structure of the feldspar crystals. Larvikite formed deep beneath the Earth’s surface through slow cooling magma, allowing its large crystals to develop over millions of years.
Highly valued in both mineral collections and architecture, Larvikite is admired for its durability, striking appearance, and fascinating geological formation.
