Otodus megalodon, the largest shark to ever live, patrolled the world's oceans for roughly 20 million years before going extinct approximately 3.6 million years ago. Its teeth, which it shed continuously throughout its life, are the primary fossil record it left behind. That abundance is both a gift and a complication: the market is flooded with replicas, heavily restored specimens, and outright fakes.

Here is what to look for before you buy.

Enamel Condition

Authentic Megalodon teeth have a hard, glossy enamel layer on the crown. Run your fingernail across the blade — genuine enamel has a distinct hardness and a subtle sheen that resin or paint cannot fully replicate. Chips and minor wear are normal and expected on a fossil that is millions of years old. Suspiciously perfect enamel on an otherwise aged-looking tooth is a red flag.

Serrations

Megalodon teeth are serrated along both edges of the blade, and those serrations should be sharp, consistent, and visible to the naked eye. Under a loupe or magnifying glass, each serration on a genuine tooth will itself have micro-serrations — a detail that is nearly impossible to replicate in a cast. Blunt, uniform, or molded-looking serrations suggest a reproduction.

Root Condition

The root of a Megalodon tooth is typically bilobed (two lobes separated by a nutrient groove) and composed of a different material than the crown — it fossilizes differently and often shows a distinct color contrast. A root that matches the crown too perfectly in color and texture may indicate heavy restoration or a full cast.

Color and Mineralization

Genuine Megalodon teeth fossilize in a wide range of colors — black, grey, tan, brown, cream, and even blue or green — depending on the sediment they were buried in. Color alone does not authenticate a tooth, but uniform, painted-on color (especially on the root) is a warning sign. Look for natural variation and the subtle matrix staining that comes from millions of years in the ground.

Weight

A real fossil tooth has been mineralized — organic material replaced by minerals over time — making it significantly heavier than a resin cast of the same size. If a large tooth feels surprisingly light, treat it with skepticism.

Provenance and Documentation

Reputable dealers provide information about where a specimen was recovered. The most common sources for Megalodon teeth are the coastal rivers and offshore waters of North and South Carolina, Florida, and Morocco. Teeth from different localities fossilize differently, and a knowledgeable seller should be able to speak to that. Documentation does not guarantee authenticity, but its absence — especially from a high-priced specimen — is worth noting.

Restoration: What Is Acceptable?

Minor restoration is common and accepted in the fossil market. A small filled chip or stabilized crack does not diminish a specimen's scientific or collectible value significantly, provided it is disclosed. What matters is the degree of restoration and whether it was disclosed at the point of sale. Ask directly: What percentage of this tooth is original material? Any honest dealer will answer.

The specimens are geologically accessible, visually dramatic, and carry genuine scientific significance.
