The Great Locomotive Chase - Original Western & Atlantic Railroad Track & Bond

On April 12th 1862 Union spies under James J Andrews stole a locomotive named, "The General," on the Western & Atlantic Railroad line in Big Shanty, GA. The plan was to burn bridges along that line serving the Confederates vital rail supply link between Atlanta and Chattanooga. Moments after "The General," was stolen, its conductor William A Fuller chased after it on foot for two miles, then proceeded by handcar. As "The General" raced towards Chattanooga, the Union spies cut telegraph lines and tore up track to prevent capture , even bluffing their wat past Confederate sentries. The whole time being pursued by Conductor Fuller. Witht the train, out of steam and the raid falling apart, the men abandoned the train and fled into the woods where they were captured by Confederate forces spurred on by the actions of conductor Fuller, who was able to retrieve his stolen engine. This is a cut section of the Western & Atlantic railroad, recovered on a spur line that went from the main line to "Tunnel Hill." "Tunnel Hill" was at the Northern end of the chase where Andrews men abandoned "The General" and fled into the woods.
