French Mousterian Neanderthal Tool

These early stone tools of the Mousterian industry were used by the extinct species of hominind, Neanderthal man. Used for processing meat and plant material, these tools were discovered at the famous Fontmaure Site in France.

** Homo Neanderthal **

The Neanderthal, a species of the genus Homo, was a near relative of our own species. Its scientific name is Homo neanderthalensis or Homo sapiens neanderthalensis. Neanderthal fossils were only found in Europe, Asia Minor and up to central Asia.

Neanderthals are an extinct species or subspecies of archaic humans who lived in Eurasia until about 40,000 years ago. While the cause of their extinction remains “highly contested,” demographic factors like small population size, inbreeding, and random fluctuations are considered likely factors. Other scholars have proposed competitive replacement, assimilation into the modern human genome, great climatic change, disease, or a combination of these factors.

** Fontmaure site **

Fontmaure is situated in the hills and valleys of North Poitou, near the old village of Vellèches in the Department of the Vienne. It is a Paleolithic settlement of outstanding importance, between a North West and South West culture region.
