RECOVERED FROM THE WATER OF SAMANA BAY IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC IN THE 1980'S.
IN JUSLY OF 1724, TWO SHIPS LEFT CADIZ, SPAIN BOUND FOR VERACRUZ, MEXICO. THE CONDE DE TOLOSA AND NUESTRA SENORA DE GUADALUPE WERE CARRYING 1200 PASSENGERS AND CREW. THEY ALSO CARRIED A VARIETY OF CARGO FOR DELIVERY TO THE NEW WORLD. MOST IMPORTANTLY THEY HAD IN THEIR HOLDS 400 TONS OF MERCURY TO BE USED IN REFINING THE SILVER AND GOLD BEING MINDED IN MEXICO.
ON AUGUST 24T, 1724, THE SHIPS WERE CAUGHT IN A TREMENDOUS HURRICANE AND WRECKED OFF SAMANA BAY ON THE NORTHEAST COAST OF THE ISLAND OF HISPANIOLA.
THE GALLEONS AND THEIR TREASURES LAID BURIED IN THE SAND IN 40 FT OF WATER FOR 250 YEARS.
IN THE LATE 1970'S THE SHIPS WERE IDENTIFIED AND SALVAGE WAS BEGUN ON THE SHIPS NOW KNOWN AS THE QUICKSLIVER GALLEONS. THE TREASURES INCLUDE CANNONS, AMPHORA USED FOR OIL, WATER, WINE, AND OLIVES, CRYSTAL GOBLETS, GOLD JEWELRY, AND OF COURSE TONS OF MERCURY IN BAGS INSIDE SMALL WOODEN KEGS.
